A passionate young feminist activist, Latifa Lyles attended her first NOW rally at 16. In 1992, she, and a couple of friends, boarded a bus in New York City, where she grew up, and headed to the NOW March for Women’s Lives in Washington, D.C. Since then, Lyles has worked for women’s rights on several issues as a community and political organizer, and holds a deep commitment to economic justice, fighting racism, and bridging the gap between feminists of all generations.
Lyles is serving her second term on NOW’s National Board of Directors and is currently the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director. She has served on the NOW Board’s Budget and Fundraising Committees, and is currently a Board Liaison to the National NOW Young Feminist Task Force. She also serves on the Inter-generational Partnership Committee. Lyles has been a local chapter activist and leader in Washington, D.C.
One of her first experiences working for the public interest was doing public policy analysis for the Older Women’s League (OWL), where she provided a young voice for older women’s issues, including the ills of the right wing’s plan to privatize Social Security. After leaving OWL, Lyles joined the National NOW staff as the Equality Action Fund Manager, and later became Development Planner focusing on new-member development and direct marketing. Also while at NOW, she did outreach and organizing for various local and National NOW actions and events and political campaign work, including working for the NOW/PAC on the 2000 Hillary For Senate and Carolyn McCarthy campaigns in New York.
Currently, Lyles heads the Membership Department for The Trial Lawyers for Public Justice (TLPJ) Foundation, where she is responsible for managing the organization’s membership fundraising program and budget, and organizing major fundraising events. TLPJ, the largest public interest law firm in the nation, fights for justice through litigation designed to enhance civil rights and civil liberties, consumers’ rights, environmental protection, workers' rights, and the civil justice system.
"I enthusiasticly support Kim and her team. I treasure how young feminists are valuable to her decision-making process."
