Kim Gandy has been serving as President of NOW since July 2001. Kim’s term as President has coincided with some of the darkest days in US history, with George W. Bush in the White House. The tragic events of 9/11 occurred during the Gandy administration’s first month in office. Income was frozen due to anthrax threats at NOW’s post office. The Bush administration accelerated their regressive agenda while the nation’s attention was distracted by fear of an unknown enemy. Through the turmoil, Kim kept NOW’s attention focused on the preservation of our hard earned rights, the promotion of peace and justice over intimidation and violence. Kim would not allow NOW to be held down or held back by the formidable challenges of the times. Under Kim’s leadership, NOW gained financial prosperity, programs were created and expanded, chapter resources blossomed, and NOW’s voice was heard again and again. Today NOW is stronger than ever, with golden opportunity to continue to expand the exciting new programs and projects that have been created, and to initiate new programs that are ready to unroll.
Kim joined NOW at age 19 when she felt the effects of Louisiana's oppressive "head and master" law at her workplace. Outraged that AT&T required her husband's permission for some employee benefits, Kim started fighting and has never looked back. In Louisiana, she held NOW office at every level from chapter task force chair to state president and started 11 chapters. Outside of NOW, Kim, an attorney, prosecuted child sexual abuse offenders, won sex discrimination cases, and rewrote or eliminated some of Louisiana's worst family laws. She also ran for state representative, giving an entrenched right wing incumbent his biggest political scare, and worked with NOW's allies, such as serving as secretary of the state Lesbian and Gay Political Action Caucus. After serving as a national board member and regional director, Kim became National Secretary. As Executive VP, Kim ran the Louisiana Project, which tripled the number of women in the state legislature, and she restructured NOW's fundraising efforts, saving over $2 million. Whether going head-to-head with John Sununu on national television or sitting with a half dozen chapter members in a living room working on ways to expand their membership, Kim brings her total commitment to NOW.

"Acting for NOW takes vision, passion, sweat, energy, charisma,
and loud vocal cords! Acting for NOW requires being heard, seen, and
respected. Acting for NOW is not a job, it's a lifestyle.
And that's exactly why Kim Gandy's team has my support."
